Media Release: Macomb Dakota (MI) vs. Chippewa Valley (MI)

September 1, 2015

Macomb, MI: August 27, 2015 – The Great American Rivalry Series is proud to announce that it will feature “The Backyard Brawl,” a northern Detroit area rivalry game between Macomb’s Dakota Cougars and the Chippewa Valley Big Reds from neighboring Clinton Township in the Series’ third weekend of games for 2015. This 24 year rivalry between the two teams from neighboring townships will be presented by the United States Marine Corps and played on Thursday, September 3 at Dakota High School. Featuring some of the longest running rivalries in high school football, the 2015 Great American Rivalry Series will feature 100 showdowns nationwide. All of these great games come with great football, hard earned sweat and a heavy dose of hometown pride.

For the 12th year, the Great American Rivalry Series has selected an exclusive collection of top-notch rivalries across the country, covering 40 states and over 100 cities throughout the country. Wrapped in tradition, these annual battles excite entire communities, while celebrating the schools, their teams, and their fans. We Know Friday NightsTM

This annual series between the two football powerhouses pits teams that have both won state championships. Dakota took home the Division I State Championships in 2006 and 2007 while Chippewa Valley took home a Division II Championship in 2001. Both teams now battle for the title in the Macomb Area Conference Red Division, which Chippewa Valley took from Dakota in a 28-27 win after losing to Dakota earlier in the season, and also broke a 14 game losing streak in the series. The series currently stands with Dakota leading 49-14-3.

The Dakota-Chippewa Valley game was selected as one of the top 100 must-see match ups for the 12th Annual Series and has become a traditional “brawl” in the backyards of these two neighboring communities.

The winning team earns year-long bragging rights and will take home the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Marines. The game’s Most Valuable Player and the top student-athlete from each school are also recognized as part of the Series. Along with these awards, an alumnus from each school will be inducted into the 12th class of the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame.
