The 52nd Island Cup was as hyped up as ever this year as the Whalers came into the game 4-6 while the Martha’s Vineyard Vineyarders came in 6-4. Just like every year, the teams throw all the records out the window when it comes to this passionate rivalry and the teams battle solely for bragging rights.
The Whalers received the ball first and turned it over on a interception. Martha’s Vineyard got a drive going but could not turn it into points and were forced to kick it back to Nantucket. Nantucket’s Dylan Perry took the ball 85 yards for a touchdown on the return. The Whalers missed the extra point, so they led 6-0 towards the end of the first quarter. The Vineyarders finally got on the board midway thru the 2nd quarter. They tacked on the extra point to take a 1-point lead, 7-6. Just before the half, Nantucket scored on a 38-yard pass play. They went for 2 and converted to take a 14-7 lead into the locker rooms at half.
Nantucket came out of the locker room with a trick up their sleeve. They started the 2nd half with an onside kick and managed to gain possession of the ball. The Whalers turned the risky gamble into a Perry touchdown. The Vineyarders blocked the extra point attempt, so the score stood 20-7. MV answers right back after Chris Watkins returns the ensuing kickoff deep into Whaler territory. Joe Turney scored on the next play after the return to bring MV within 6, 20-14. Nantucket answered right back on their next possession. Hunter Grey scored for the Whalers, but the extra point is no good once again so the Whalers led 26-14 with under 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
Going into the 4th quarter the Vineyarders still trailed 26-14 with under 5 minutes left to play. MV desperately needed to score to have a chance at winning this game. Brian Watkins gave them just what they needed when he hauled in a 50-yard touchdown catch to bring the Vineyarders within 5, 26-21. Nantucket could not do anything with the ball and were forced to give it back to MV with 2 minutes remaining in the game. Facing a 3rd and 10 with :30 seconds remaining, Alec Tattersall found Turney for a short pass that turned into a solid gain to pick up the first down. As the seconds kept ticking off, Tattersall dropped back to find Turney again on the next play. Turney took the screen pass 7 yards into the endzone to give the Vineyarders the win! The touchdown was Turney’s 3rd score of the game.
Quarterback Alec Tattersall was named the game’s MVP. The win gave the Vineyarders the Island Cup for the 9th consecutive year. The win also evened the series in the Island Cup, 17-17.
