St. Augustine 19, Cathedral Catholic 7 (10/25/13)

October 26, 2013

SAN DIEGO, CA — St. Augustine set the tone early.

The St. Augustine Saints used a big opening score to propel them to a 19-7 win over the Cathedral Catholic Dons in the annual “Holy Bowl” on Friday night at Manchester Stadium. More than 10,000 watched the game that was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

St. Augustine got the ball first and went 80 yards with Tyler Herburger’s 2-yard TD run capping off a nine-minute drive. Then after Chris Moliga scored with his own 2-yard TD run to tie the game, Jo Jo Hudson hit Ethan Sanchez with a 75-yard strike to give St. Augustine the lead for good.

Elijah Preston ran for 114 yards and a 40-yard score to be named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player. Hudson finished with 187 yards.

Moliga ran for 83 yards and a TD for the Dons, who lead the all-time series 31-20 and had won 27 of the last 39 matchups.

St. Augustine (6-2) is at Scripps Ranch next Friday night, while Catholic Cathedral (6-2) hosts Mira Mesa the same night.

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
