Green Valley 58, Basic 36 (9/7/13)

September 8, 2013

HENDERSON, NV — Points were aplenty for Green Valley and Basic on Saturday night.

The Green Valley Gators blitzed the Basic Wolves 58-36 in the annual “Henderson Bowl” at Green Valley High School. More than 4,500 fans were in attendance for the game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

The Gators and the Wolves combined for the most points ever in the series. The previous high was 75 — that was shattered before the fourth quarter.

Green Valley has now won three straight in the series and holds a 15-8 all-time series lead.

Senior receiver Markus Varner was named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player. He finished with 110 yards, a receiving TD and a fumble recovery for another score.

Junior quarterback Christian Lopez had 348 total yards and accounted for five TDs for the Gators. Junior back Larry Norman ran for 215 yards and a score.

The Wolves were led by senior quarterback Antraye Johnson, who had 372 total yards to go along with a couple of scores.

Both teams are on the road on Thursday night with Green Valley (1-1) going to Coronado and Basic (1-1) visiting Las Vegas

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
