Good Counsel 13, Dematha 10 (10/5/12)

October 6, 2012

The Good Counsel Falcons beat the Dematha Stags in a defensive battle between the schools that have combined to win the last 9 WCAC championships. Good Counsel has won it the past 3 seasons and kept right on pace to repeat again this year with their 13-10 win over their Rival, Dematha. The win moved the Falcons to 5-1 on the season, while Dematha dropped their first game and are now 5-1.

The scoring started in the first quarter when Good Counsel’s Kendall Fuller took a punt 72 yards for a touchdown. Fuller is ranked as the #1 defensive back in the country according to and has committed to play in college at Virginia Tech University. Dematha got on the board soon after Fuller’s touchdown with a field goal to bring the score to 7-3 in favor of Good Counsel at the end of the first quarter. Late in the second quarter, running back Leo Ekwoge ran in another touchdown for the Falcons to increase their lead to 13-3 on a missed PAT. This would prove to be the winning score for the Falcons, who’s defense turned it up a notch on Dematha’s quarterback John Lovett. Seniors Kirk Garner and C.J. Jones each picked-off Lovett in the first half to erase any threat the Stags had at scoring. The teams entered the half with a 13-3 score in favor of the Falcons.

Good Counsel came out in the second half without 2 of their starting linebackers. Seniors Darien Carr and Dorian O’Daniel each left the game with ankle and shoulder injuries, respectively. The third quarter was more of the same for Dematha as they could not get anything going offensively. The Stags finally managed to score a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Lovett connected with sophomore Darryl Turner to bring the Stags within 3, but that is as close as they would get. Dematha had a chance to tie the game late but they could not handle the snap on the field goal try. Good Counsel was able to run out the clock and capture the 13-10 win over Dematha. The story of the night was the Good Counsel defense as they allowed Dematha to enter the red zone just 3 times, allowing just 1 field goal in those 3 tries.

Good Counsel’s Kendall Fuller was named the Great American Rivalry Series MVP.
