Godby 40, Lincoln 28 (11/8/12)

November 9, 2012

When you say Tallahassee Football, the next thought includes Godby and Lincoln High Schools. Both teams have been ranked in the state and nationally, and both schools have won their share of State Championships. Tonight we are at the Gene Cox Stadium for the cross-town matchup between the Godby Cougars and the Lincoln Trojans. The Trojans defeated Godby 35-21 last season en route to their 13th straight district title. The two schools first met in 1977 with the Trojans leading the all-time series 24-12. Lincoln has won the last 5 meetings, but the Cougars are looking to rebound from last weekend’s loss to Wakulla to snap the streak. Currently, the Lincoln Trojans have lived up to their billing as a perennial powerhouse with their perfect 8-0 record in 2012.

As the fans pack the stands for this long time rivalry, both teams are ready for kickoff. First half gets started with the Cougars getting the points up early with their first touchdown, with Lincoln answering back bringing the score quickly 7-7. Next play turns out good for Godby after a fumble is recovered which leads to yet another touchdown for the Godby Cougars, they want this win especially against the undefeated Trojans. As half time is approaching Godby scores yet another touchdown while Lincoln kicks a field goal going into halftime with a score of 19-13, Godby.

The Cougars come running out fired up ready to expand their lead even more, as the Cougars have an awesome touchdown pass, with only minutes into the second half expanding their lead more. The Cougars lost the ball on a turnover. Now its Lincoln’s turn with the ball and they capitalize with a 50-yard touchdown, making the score 26-22. With just 11 minutes left in the game Godby has a 40-yard kick return to give them great field position. Godby scored yet again on a 45-yard touchdown run! The Trojans quickly answer back with a quick touchdown, as Godby scores, not one, but two touchdowns back to back without the Trojans even moving the ball.

The Godby Cougars have done the unthinkable, they defeated the Lincoln Trojans with a final score of 40-28 for the first time in 5 years. The Cougars cannot believe it as they take home their first ever Great American Rivalry Series Championship Trophy! The most valuable player of the game was Godby’s very own #3 Kenny Young!! Congratulations!

*On a special note: The Great American Rivalry Series and United States Marines sends our condolences to the entire Brockmeier family, especially his wife, Melanie and his young children, Brodie and Carson. May he rest in peace.
