Gar-Field 14, Woodbridge 10 (9/23/11)

It’s Friday Night Football time, and it’s been raining Vikings and Indians here in Woodbridge VA for the past 13 hours. With a 7:30 start time and the football field under what seems like 2 inches of water, the rain finally stops and we are ready for some slip and slide football.

The rivalry is between Woodbridge and Gar-Field, two of the oldest schools in Prince William County and both with steep football programs. These teams have played each other every year since 1965. This going to be a great rivalry game!

With only 6 minutes into the game, both teams have scored touchdowns and we are tied already in the 1st quarter. If this game is played how it was in 2010, we will end with going into 6 overtimes until we find out the winner of this game. The first half comes to an end with Woodbridge kicking a field goal in the 2nd quarter to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.

The second half gets underway, and #23 Shakeem Copeland from Gar-Field runs a 31-yard touchdown on 4th and 1 making the score 14-10, in favor of Gar-Field. This play ends up earning Copeland the Most Valuable Player of the Game award.

Woodbridge now has the ball in the 4th quarter on the 44-yard line, but fumbles. Gar-Field recovers, bringing the Rivalry Game to a close with the final score, Gar-Field 14 and Woodbridge 10.

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
