MONTVALE, NJ — Don Bosco Prep saved its biggest win for its last game.
Playing the No. 1 team in the state and a top-5 team nationally, the Don Bosco Prep Ironmen stunned the St. Joseph Regional Green Knights 28-21 on Thursday at St. Joseph Regional High School. More than 6,000 were in attendance for the game that was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
Tied at 21-all, Frank Nutile (a Temple commit) found Tom Sweeney (a Boston College commit) for a 6-yard TD with 3:25 remaining to give Don Bosco Prep a 28-21 lead. St. Joseph Regional then moved the ball down to the 19-yard line but Spencer Aukamp’s fourth-down pass attempt was batted down.
Nutile threw for 196 yards and two scores for the Ironmen, who snapped the Green Knights’ 15-game winning streak. Daivon Ellison ran for an 11-yard TD and returned a kickoff 90 yards for another score to be named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player.
Aukamp threw for 194 yards and a TD and ran for another 61 yards for the Green Knights, who snapped the Ironmen’s 61-game winning streak with a win last season.
St. Joseph Regional (9-1) plays Pope John next Friday for the NJSIAA/Atlantic Health Non-Public, Group 3 championship, its fifth straight title. The season is over for Don Bosco Prep (7-4).
