October 5, 2013

BOUTTE, LA — Destrehan had no problem with Hahnville on Friday night.

The Destrehan Wildcats cruised to a 49-0 win over the Hahnville Tigers in the annual “Battle on the River” at Hahnville High School. Over 6,000 fans were at the game that was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

Quarterback Donovan Isom threw for four touchdowns and rushed for a fifth to be named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player. He threw a 53-yarder to Kirk Merritt, an 11- and a 50-yarder to John Williams and a 16-yarder to Alfred Smith — all coming in the first quarter.

The Wildcats lead 31-20-2 in the all-time series, which goes back to 1946. The Tigers had won four straight.

Destrehan (5-0), which has already surpassed last year’s win total, hosts Thibodaux next Friday night and Hahnville (2-3) is at Terrebonne the same night.

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
