The “Battle for the Sabre” in was a highly anticipated kick-off game for both schools, each of them military schools fighting to win the decorative military sword.
The first half was an exciting one with La Salle winning the coin toss and the charged atmosphere from the crowd lifting them into a deep kickoff. With the fans going wild, Christian Brothers Academy scored a touchdown on a long run. La Salle answered right back with a kickoff return for a touchdown, then intercepted to get the ball back and score again.
After half-time, Christian Brothers’ game took off, scoring touchdown after touchdown, with La Salle Institute holding on and trying to score another touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Christian Brothers scored again after a long pass took them to the one-yard line. La Salle scored on a quick 50-yard run, but Christian Brothers easily won with a score of 43-27.
Christian Brothers Academy was favored from the start, but that didn’t stop La Salle Institute from hanging in there the entire time, fighting hard even to the end. Christian Brothers came out with the win and the sabre, which they will keep until the two teams meet again next year.
The Great American Rivalry Series and United States Marine Corps presented Christian Brothers Academy with their first Rivalry Series Championship Trophy and Hats, #7 senior Earl Ricketts was named Most Valuable Player of the game.
Great job to both teams, and best of luck this season!
