BAKERSFIELD, CA — Bakersfield’s defense came up huge on Friday night.
The Bakersfield Drillers beat the Frontier Titans 42-21 in front of over 7,000 fans at Frontier High School in a game that was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
Bakersfield, which is 3-1 all-time in the series, recorded seven sacks and forced four turnovers. The defense forced a three-and-out on Frontier’s first possession and Derrick Vickers followed with a 53-yard scoring run.
Asauni Rufus was named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player after running for 98 yards and three TDs — one of which was the 50th of his career.
Filling in for an injured player, quarterback Caleb Thompson threw TD passes to Brady Serda (42 yards) and Jasmit Thind (10) for the Titans.
Bakersfield (6-2) hosts Centennial next Friday night and Frontier (3-5) is at Stockdale the same night.
