2008 Great American Rivalry Preview

For over a century families, students, and fans can be found crowding into a stadium, snow, wind or rain, every fall to support their Alma Mater every weekend. This year is no different and the Great American Rivalry Series takes the main stage as it celebrates high school football at its best. Kickoff is on August 29th with two amazing rivalry games; the American Division presented by the US Marine Corps starts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with Ambridge vs. Aliquippa. The National Division presented by the US Air Force kicks off in Decatur, Alabama with Decatur vs. Austin. While each rivalry game brings a different tradition to the field, all games will be accompanied by down and dirty grid iron fun.

Other games featured in the Series this year:

UNION VS. JENKS, Tulsa OK: It has been dubbed by one source “the best high school football rivalry in the nation”. The Backyard Bowl, played at the University of Tulsa, has drawn over 40,000 fans. Union and Jenks, based less than ten miles apart, have become the leading teams in Oklahoma state football in the recent years, even facing off in the state championships. Both teams have been ranked nationally and have been known to bring a show. Last year Union defeated Jenks in overtime 43-42 after a fourth quarter comeback.

ST. XAVIER VS. TRINITY, Louisville KY: Separated by only five miles, two of Kentucky’s finest football teams go head to head at the Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium at the University of Louisville. For ten straight years the stadium has been pack withed 30,000+ fans cheering on their favorite team as they play for rivalry bragging rights. St. Xavier holds the series record thus far 32-29- 2. Both teams have won state titles, often battling each other for the title, and have been nationally ranked. These powerhouse
teams will give everyone what they are asking for, a grudge match where players stretch themselves to the limit to take home the Series title.

SKYLINE VS. IDAHO FALLS, Idaho Falls ID: This rivalry game appropriately called the “Emotion Bowl” started with the development of a new high school. As the name states emotions run high because not only does the winning team get bragging rights for the next year they also get to paint the losing teams goal post their team colors of the shared stadium. Idaho Falls has dominated this rivalry since 1996. Who’s year will it be this year?

VALDOSTA VS. LOWNDES, Valdosta GA: This will be the 40th year matchup between the Vikings and the Wildcats. This is not a rivalry game; this is a war with Valdosta holding the series at 33-12. Don’t count Lowndes out, before their 2007 game they had won five straight years in a row. This series dubbed the “Winnersville Classic” dates back to 1968 and the town splits in half every game day during the bitter battle.
